With the summer just getting started, it is very tempting to go outside and take part in many different activities. Things such as swimming, running, biking, or simply going for a walk come to mind. While these can be fun, there are precautions that must be taken before getting outside, as they can also be physically demanding, and potentially dangerous. It is important to remember the following tips to ensure you have the safest summer possible.
If your activity is on land, such as running or biking, be sure to plan your route out before getting started. Getting lost can be both frustrating and dangerous while putting an extra toll on your body. One of the most important things is to remember to hydrate and bring enough water to last you more than your planned route. Stretching is also crucial. Improper or lack of stretching can lead to serious injury or an inefficient workout. Whether it be walking, running, rollerblading, biking, or anything else, be sure to look into the proper stretching exercises to maximize the efficiency of your workout. Also be sure to have proper equipment, including the appropriate clothing for each activity as well as proper footwear. If you are not properly equipped, it can also cause injuries. Improper clothing can cause a lack of circulation, or if it is too constraining, it can cause you to overheat. Shoes that are worn or not made for your specific activity can also cause injury and inefficient workouts. One final tip is to be sure to constantly be protected from the sun. Wear a hat and be sure to apply sunscreen frequently.
If you choose to swim, the precautions are somewhat similar. Be sure to stretch properly before going in the water. Swimming can be dangerous, so also be sure to swim with a lifeguard on duty, or at the very least with a buddy who can help out if anything goes wrong. As with any activity, pushing yourself can be good for your health, but be sure to not go too far as to prevent injury.
The summer can be a very fun season, but it is also important to be safe. Be sure to follow these tips to ensure that your summer will be and fun as possible!
