Causes: Physical Therapy on Amherst Street

Back pain is one of the most common medical conditions that you will experience at some point in your life. This kind of pain cannot be ignored and can have many causes: pulled muscle or tendon, inflammation, arthritis, osteoporosis, injured herniated and ruptured discs, stress, and fibromyalgia.

Back pain can happen suddenly or slowly develop over time and cause either a strain or a sprain. A strain or sprain can happen when you are lifting heavy objects, movements that are more sudden and your back does not prepare for it, poor posture, and sports injuries.

Treatment and Prevention:

You can do simple things to avoid back pain and prevent it from reoccurring—improving your physical condition and learning how your body functions are important. In order to keep your back healthy and strong, we suggest exercising low-impact activities that don’t strain your back, such as walking and swimming—building muscle strength and flexibility, involving exercises that work your back muscles and help you develop that stronger back.

Knowing how to use your body is very important as well when it comes to just doing everyday activities. Standing tall, making sure you are not slouching, having good posture, alternating feet while standing for long periods. Sitting smart, making sure you are elevating your position in the best way that is comfortable for you.

You can choose to place a pillow for more support and changing your position every half an hour. Avoiding heavy lifting, and if there is something that you can lift that is heavy, ask someone for help or try to lift with your legs, not your back
