McKenzie Method in Astoria

What if the chronic pain you’re experiencing can be healed without ever making an appointment for an MRI or X-ray? The McKenzie Method of MDT (Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy) is a great substitute for those traditional diagnostic techniques which can wind up costing a lot of time and money. Originally developed by Robin McKenzie in the 50’s, this form of physical therapy utilizes the principle of the body’s natural healing potential and delivers results without any need for heat pads, needles, surgery, or medication. What separates this method from most others is the passing of knowledge onto the patient so they can walk away with the personal symptom management skills required for continuing a pain free lifestyle.

Since The McKenzie Method strongly believes our behavior plays a large role in our physical health, you can expect a thorough evaluation. A clinician will open the therapy with extensive questions about your symptoms’ history. Next, you’ll be asked to perform a series of repeated exercises. The clinician will document any noticeable differences in the symptoms and range of movements related to the progression of these exercises. After the 30-45 minute assessment is completed, the therapist will use the recorded data to classify your specific condition.

From there, the healing process begins. Through a course of appointments, you will engage in specially designed exercises on-site with your McKenzie Method provider. But the therapy doesn’t end there. The McKenzie Method focuses on healing the patient in the fewest amount of sessions possible. This means that a portion of the recovery is dependent on the exercises being performed outside of the office as well. Ultimately, it will be up to you to keep up with avoiding any detrimental postures and practicing more favorable habits.

While The McKenzie Method does take personal responsibility, remember that you are never completely alone. Your local physical therapy office will always be there to aid you through the process to ensure a speedy recovery. At Advance Physical Therapy, we have licensed McKenzie Institute professionals on staff in each of our New York offices located in Wantagh, Valley Stream, Lindenhurst, and Astoria.
