Wrist pain can be defined as any pain or discomfort in the wrist. While the most common cause of wrist pain is carpal tunnel syndrome, wrist injury, arthritis, and gout could all attribute to wrist pain. When it comes to this conditions, there are several symptoms that may occur depending on the underlying cause. Swollen fingers, swelling or redness on the wrist, difficulty making a fist, pain or numbness, and sharp pain in the hand may indicate a serious problem. If the symptoms persist, see your doctor immediately. A healthcare professional can diagnose the cause of wrist pain through a physical examination and offer treatment options for your condition.

Depending on your physical examination, your doctor may recommend physical therapy to help decrease the pain and increase the mobility in your wrist. Conditions like arthritis and carpal tunnel syndrome can both be helped by a combination of physical therapy and home remedies. Stretching and strength exercises- as well as the use of a night splint- can all help manage arthritis and carpal tunnel syndrome. Your therapist may also educate you on specific wrist positions and stretch techniques you can perform at home or work.

A direct injury, like a wrist fracture, may also require some physical therapy after the bone heals to regain strength and mobility. Therapy usually begins once the cast is removed, which is typically 6-8 weeks after injury. Here are three examples of exercises that can help you along your rehabilitation:

  1. Extension/Flexion- bending the wrist up and down
  2. Wrist Deviation- side-to-side movement of the wrist
  3. Supination/Pronation- flipping of the forearm up and down
