Your back is used in nearly every activity you do. After all, there is a reason for the saying “lift with your legs, not your back.” The back is beautifully constructed, consisting of approximately seventy-seven muscles that work in unison to allow you to move about as freely as you do. Playing sports or doing anything physical can take a toll on your back, especially if you don’t stretch beforehand.

There are five stretches that can be done to help relieve your back pain. The first one is called the lumbar extension stretch. This stretch involves lying on your stomach with your elbows bent underneath you. You then push yourself up, lifting your upper torso off the ground. The second stretch to help out your back involves lying on your back and bringing your knees to your chest, whether it be one knee at a time or both knees at the same time. This allows for the lower back to be stretched out. There are also yoga-style stretches such as child’s pose and the angry cat. The final stretch is a sciatic nerve stretch where you lie on your back and bring one knee at a time up to your chest by grabbing the back of your knee and pulling.
