Prehab is a proactive approach to avoiding pain and injury. After an incident of trauma, for example, a car accident, a stroke, or a fall, one needs to undergo some form of rehabilitation. Prehab is the opposite as it is a form of rehabilitation but not as a result of trauma, focusing instead on the body’s development of its muscles and joints that will help prevent serious injury in the future.

David Cruz wrote an article for coreperformance.com called Avoiding Injury with Prehab. He points out that prehab builds strength and stability and improves mobility, balance and joint function, and prehab can help strengthen your hips, core, and shoulders. If you sit in front of a computer all day, your hips become locked into place, and as a result your posture and shoulders suffer. Cruz states that locked shoulders can reduce your mobility and your joints can become poorly aligned as a result of lack of mobility. Prehab can improve posture and alignment and allowing joints to move while also building up injury prone areas that will require attention later on in life. Prehab can also strengthen the muscles that are supporting your upper back and rotator cuffs, and in turn will allow your shoulder joints to move freely.

There are some exercises that you can do that are simple routines as simple stretches can work wonders. One exercise you can try is by lying face down on a yoga mat or exercise mat and stretching your arms out behind you. This is called a Floor Y. Another exercise you can try is called The Mini Band, in which a mini band is placed just above your knees and you stand in an athletic bases position with your knees bent. The next step is to move your knees inwards and outwards as this will work the outsides of your hips. Other exercises you can do focusing on the shoulders are front-facing and lateral pillar bridges.

Prehab is only a stepping stone in the right direction to ensure a healthy lifestyle for yourself.
