Muscular injuries can be challenging to manage for some people who deal with these challenges. At Advance Physical Therapy, we understand how a muscle strain or tear can be devastating for our patients. Our team of experts would like to provide you with information on how to differentiate a muscle strain from a tear and discuss the many ways in which we can help you through physical therapy treatment methods!

Muscle Pull

A muscle strain, or pulled muscle, is a common but painful injury that occurs when your muscle is torn or overstretched. Common stimulants include overuse, fatigue, or improper muscle use. Pulled muscles are most common in your lower back, hamstring, shoulder, and neck. You will likely feel a pulled muscle when it happens, and some of your symptoms might include:

  • Soreness.
  • Limited range of motion.
  • Sudden pain.
  • Bruising.
  • Swelling.
  • Weakness.
  • Stiffness.

Muscle Tear

A muscle tear is a more severe injury that can take a longer time to heal. Muscle tears occur when the fibrous tissue of a ligament, muscle, or tendon is ripped and can be a result of the same movements that cause strains. Some of the symptoms you might experience with a muscle tear could include:

  • Sudden pain.
  • A “pop” sound at the time of the injury.
  • Inability to bear weight on the area.
  • Immobility.
  • Loose joint.

What Can Be Done To Treat These Muscle Injuries?

Both muscle tears and muscle pulls can occur while playing various sports, working out, or just doing normal everyday activities. After you initially become injured, you can try using an ice pack and resting in the area. However, if you think you might be dealing with a severe muscle pull or tear, you should not hesitate to contact our team. We will work to evaluate your symptoms and take immediate action so you can get back to doing the things you love, pain free!
